Building Community Through the Arts
Summer offers a renewed opportunity to reflect on the role a public arts venue plays in community life. June’s national observance of Pride Month served as one reminder of something that remains relevant all year long: strong communities are built not only through the services and spaces a city provides, but also through the ways people feel welcomed, connected, and included in public life.
That is one of the most important functions of the arts. A performing arts center is more than a place where events happen. It is a civic gathering place—one where residents and visitors come together to experience storytelling, music, humor, and creativity in ways that strengthen the social fabric of a community. In a time when much of daily life can feel fast-moving and fragmented, opportunities to gather for shared experiences carry real value.
For a public institution, creating that sense of welcome is part of the responsibility. Our role is not simply to present performances, but to steward a space where people from many backgrounds can feel invited into the cultural life of the city. That means embracing a broad range of artistic voices, genres, and experiences, and ensuring that our programming reflects both excellence and openness.
Often, the performances that resonate most are those that speak to something fundamentally human: friendship, resilience, humor, and acceptance. These themes endure because they connect across generations and across differences. They remind us that community is built not only through proximity, but through shared experiences and mutual recognition.
That spirit continues to shape the work we do at Sandy Springs Performing Arts Center. As we look ahead to the season to come, we remain committed to presenting performances that entertain, engage, and create space for connection.
In the months ahead, audiences will see that reflected in a variety of ways, including productions such as Golden Girls: The Laughs Continue this October, which draws on themes of friendship, chosen family, and laughter to bring people together through a familiar cultural touchstone.
Programming like this is part of a larger mission. As a publicly owned venue, Sandy Springs Performing Arts Center exists to serve the community with experiences that are dynamic, welcoming, and rooted in the belief that the arts are essential to civic life. Some performances invite reflection. Others offer joy and release. Many do both at once.
